2025: Year in Review
Happy New Year! We’re excited to begin a new year of making Vellum even more useful for authors like you. But before we look ahead, we want to first look back at some of the features we added in 2025:

Page Backgrounds
In 2024, our most popular request was for more ways to use backgrounds in special editions. We heard you, and in 2025 launched Page Backgrounds, which can go behind every page of content.
A vintage paper texture, a wintery scene, a sparkling star field — there’s no limit to your options for backgrounds, whether you’re styling a single chapter or your entire book.

Page Borders
Prefer to leave the background clean and clear? Page Borders — also new for 2025 — let you add character around the page instead, turning empty margins into everything from elegant frames to eye-catching accents.

Forced Edges
Page Borders aren’t limited to the inside of your book: you can also use them to decorate the edge. With our workflow for creating forced edges, developed in collaboration with Painted Wings, you can give your book edge designs that can be printed with any service.

More Options for Headings
Vellum makes it easy to give your book style in a snap. Heading Preset Settings give you control over the finishing touches. Fine-tune spacing, scale your title, switch alignment, or choose how chapter numbers appear — whether that’s 3, Chapter Three, or even III.
Also in 2025
In addition to those major features, we also made these improvements:
- Terms like Chapter are now translated for Dutch and Portuguese
- Add your social media profile for Substack
- Noto Color Emoji is a new font option for print
- Tooltips for custom images now display original filename and image size
- Chapter titles with multiple lines now break text symmetrically
- Access more recent files from the File menu
More to Come!
All of these additions were released in 2025 as free updates. If you don’t yet have Vellum, you can download from vellum.pub.
There’s more to come in 2026. The features we add to Vellum are inspired by the authors who use it, so if you have an idea that would help bring your books to life, we’d love to hear it!
