We’ve seen a lot of excitement about the new emoji feature in Vellum 3.8! We’ve also heard from a few users who’ve wondered if maybe it’s too good to be true. Here, then, are answers to some common questions about using emojis:

Emojis in ebooks? Do they actually work?
Yes! So that they can be seen on any device, Vellum converts emojis into small images that are embedded in your ebook.

Will emojis adjust with font size?
Yep! Emoji images grow and shrink to match the size of text around them.

Do emoji images meet accessibility guidelines?
We’ve taken care of that. Every emoji image includes a description (like “grinning face” 😀) for text-to-speech. Descriptions are even translated into German, Spanish, French, and Italian 🇮🇹. 

Will emoji images increase KDP delivery costs?
Only if you go crazy 🤪. Emoji images are very small, and won’t significantly affect file size unless you use a ton of them.

Do I have to worry about licensing?
No. Emoji images for ebooks are made with an open source font called Noto Color Emoji. In print, you can use the Apple Color Emoji font as part of your license for macOS.
